Technically, the term Jini refers to a set of specifications. In practice, however, many people have also used the term to refer to the Jini Starter Kit. This short-hand is typically understood within the community but the dual meaning can be confusing to newcomers.

To clarify, the Jini Starter Kit is an implementation, initially developed by Sun Microsystems, of the majority of the Jini Specifications. The new main page for the Jini Starter Kit is housed at Java.net. The URL is http://starterkit.dev.java.net. The most useful page is the download page that contains instructions for virtually every platform.

Warning for Linux users Many modern Linux distributions have problems installing using the Linux installation bundle. This is because the GNU GCJ project does not work with the ZeroG installer that Sun uses to install Jini. The best bet is to install using the Java based installer.

Warning for Java based install users The Java based installer does not contain the proper configuration to allow the java -jar command to work. You must use this command instead java -cp jini2_1.jar install. Complete instructions are available at the starter kit download page.

Dependencies

Version 2.1 of the Jini Starter Kit requires version 1.4 or newer of the SDK.

License

In October, 2005, Sun released version 2.1 of the Jini Starter Kit under the Apache 2.0 License with this announcement. Sun subsequently released version 1.2.1_002 of the Jini Starter Kit under the Apache 2.0 License as well.
